Your logo is usually the most recognisable part of your branding. A good logo sticks in people’s minds, and helps them remember your business later.
So it’s vital to get it right. You need a logo that you love so you can be proud to promote your brand. But more importantly, it must appeal to your customers – both current and potential ones.
While it can be good to take the bootstrap or DIY approach in some areas of your business, your logo isn’t one of them. Here are 4 reasons to work with a professional logo designer:
1. You get professional results
Take plumbing, for instance. You could watch a YouTube video, have a go yourself and hope for the best that you can fix that leak yourself. Or you can hire a professional plumber to fix it. They’ll sort it far easier and faster than you can, saving you time and stress, and you’ll be confident that it is properly fixed.
It’s the same with design. When you work with a professional designer, you should get a professional result.
That means you get a logo that has been created in appropriate software, like Adobe Illustrator, rather than whatever app you can get your hands on and play about with. Because when your logo is created as vector artwork in Illustrator, it’s completely scaleable. So you can supersize it and put it on the side of a bus, or shrink it right down for the side of a pen, and it’ll retain it’s quality.
Graphics created in other, non-vector based programs, like Photoshop or GIMP, will quickly look pixelated and blurry when you increase the size.
Your designer will also be able to provide your logo in all the variations and file types you’re likely to need. You’ll get files that are set up correctly for using in print projects, like your shiny new brochure, and others that are for screen projects, so it’s easy to add your logo to your website or social media profiles.
Working with a professional means you don’t need to think about things like resolution and dpi, spot colours and colour modes, and all those other bits of design jargon – all that will be taken care of for you.
2. You get a fresh perspective
Designing for yourself is hard. Even for designers – my own logo was one of the hardest projects I’ve done!
Designing for someone else is way easier.
Your designer can look at your business objectively, and with a fresh perspective. They can put themselves in your customers’ shoes more easily. That lets them come up with different ideas from you. And as two heads really are better than one, as you discuss and refine those ideas together, you can get really awesome results.
3. You get a unique identity for your business
If you go the DIY route and grab a logo template, your branding is going to end up looking really similar to everyone else who’s bought that same template.
Or if you crowdsource a logo on site like 99Designs, the logos you’re offered will be, at best, a really superficial solution with no real meaning for your business. Or at worst, it’s a quick template or even plagiarised idea. You generally just don’t know enough about the designers to know if you’re working with a professional or a hobbyist. There’s too much uncertainty.
But when you work one on one with a professional designer you get a logo that is tailor-made for you.
They can work closely with you so they understand you and your customers. And together you can craft a unique identity for your business. One that’s way more memorable and that stands out to show people how special your business is.
4. You save time
Your time is precious. It’s a finite resource. And if you’re working on a DIY logo, that’s time you’re not spending on other areas of your business.
That means you could be losing out on money if you’re doing your own design work rather than finding new customers or serving the ones you already have.
Plus, your designer will be experienced in choosing appropriate fonts, colours and imagery – something that generally takes a lot of practice to get right. If you don’t have time to practice and experiment yourself, it’s better to work with a designer and make use of their expertise. That frees up your time so you can focus on doing what you do best.
