We’re usually advised to join social media sites to promote our businesses and connect with customers but today I’m going to encourage you to delete some of your accounts!
The thing is, social media doesn’t work for everyone. Maybe your customers don’t typically use Facebook. Maybe you’ve created a Twitter account then found you don’t have time to update it. Or maybe you just don’t get the point of a particular site, such as Klout.
There are a lot of social media sites available and if you were to spend just a few minutes a day on each that would quickly add up to a lot of time. And if your customers aren’t using those sites then that’s a lot of time that would have been better spent on alternative marketing activities.
I’m not suggesting that you give up social media marketing entirely, but it is ok if you want to scale back your efforts. If your customers aren’t using a particular site don’t feel pressured to maintain an account there. Or if you feel you have too many accounts and there are some that you never seem to spend time on, why not delete those accounts rather than feeling bad about not updating them. And don’t be in a rush to sign up to new sites just in case they’re ‘the next big thing’.
I think you should focus on quality rather than quantity when it comes to social media marketing. Surely it’s more valuable for both you and your customers if you focus your energies on creating a solid presence on just a few sites than have many accounts and neglect some of them. So if you think any sites aren’t working for you don’t be afraid to ditch the dross!
